The Best Election Money Can Buy

LRF

The 2022 Laguna Beach election is shaping up to be “The Best Election Money Can Buy.” As of Fall, 2022, there are 15 PACs in Laguna Beach. (Political Action Committees.)

The latest data by searching public filings indicates that the ten most active PACs have raised over $1.8 million in this election cycle – all aimed at influencing Laguna Beach elections. The Big Kahuna is the hotel PAC which raised a staggering $1.4 million to fight Measures R and S.

The next nine PACs have raised over $450,000 which is also overwhelming for a small-town election. Back in 2018, Liberate Laguna (now Laguna Forward), spent $153,000 in support of Peter Blake and Sue Kempf. It worked.

There is a lot of "BIG MONEY" trying to impact our town’s election. Each voter can only contribute up to $440.00 to each candidates' campaigns, while contributions to PACs are unlimited.

That is what is happening in this election cycle. "BIG MONEY" is coming in from corporations, other PACS, and out of town organizations, in chunks of $10,000 or $25,000 and in one case – well over $1,000,000.00 These sums, compared to contributions by individual voters is enormous and troubling even though it's completely legal.

While some of the information published by these PACs is deceptive, misleading, or inaccurate – it gets worse. The reasons these PACs are spending big bucks is to get you to vote the way they want. You can bet that those reasons are not aligned with what is best for residents.

Please apply critical thinking as you vote. Ask questions. Use common sense. Where is the money coming from? Who is behind the ad? Why do they want you to vote this way, or that way? What is in it for them? Is what they want what you want?

For my part, I support Measure Q as a reasonable solution to preserving the quality-of-life residents moved to here to enjoy. But developers and special interests have outsized influence at City Hall, residents not so much. And, believe it or not, it has gotten worse in the two years I have been on City Council.

We need new people! We need people who are not aligned with “BIG MONEY” and will work for residents, not "BIG MONEY"

Please consider voting for Jerome Pudwill, Mark Orgill and Ruben Flores. They will serve residents well on City Council.

Thanks,

George
