GEORGE WEISS
Laguna Beach City Council
RE-ELECT
MEET GEORGE WEISS
I ran for office in 2020 because you said that things were out of balance in City decisions with commercial and visitor interests taking precedence over residents.
You said change needed to happen—that there needed to be fair and equal treatment of all residents, not just those with inside connections.
I went to work balancing the interests of residents with those of our well-represented business community and visitors.
Here’s some of the changes I got made for you:
-
Residents reported being treated in an antagonistic manner by our City Council (CC) and Executive staff. I worked to change that, and we now have a more professional Executive City Team and staff than when I started with fewer resident complaints about dismissive treatment.
-
Some texted that they were afraid to speak in front of City Council because of insulting responses made from the dais. I spearheaded civil communication standards.
-
Per complaints about a lack of transparency from CC, I alert residents on upcoming hot topics and email recaps of Council meetings with an explanation of my votes.
-
Residents now receive 12-day advance notice of future agenda items per my initiative.*I protected our library from being moved from its current location.
-
We now have the Rivian theatre and community center over some CC members’ objections thanks to my work.
-
I initiated financial assistance for those living or working in Laguna impacted by the pandemic.
I’m not a career politician---just a public servant representing you, the residents. I have done that for close to four years and am committed to keeping the changes you request happening for the next four.
A Bit About My Background
I’ve worked in corporate America as an executive for major telecom companies, including AT&T and MCI.
I’ve managed and trained a sales group, run budgets, and learned to balance customers’ needs with corporate’s demands. I’ve also run a small telecom consulting business.
I’ve been married for 40 years, and our youngest son graduated from Laguna Beach High School. We lost our eldest to a rare disease while serving in the Peace Corps. I, too, have served my country with the Marines, and am a graduate of Loyola University, Chicago with a degree in psychology.
Prior to my election to City Council, I was the past Chair of the Laguna Beach Beautification Council and of Laguna’s Housing and Human Services Committee, and past President of the Laguna Beach Film Society
What I enjoy doing in Laguna
I do yoga most days and swim in either the City pool or the ocean where I also do beach cleanups while down there. I like to dance, which I get to do at our great music events down at Bluebird Park, Fête de la Musique, and the Sawdust Festival. I also enjoy Opera Laguna and keeping a native plant and vegetable garden.
Please don’t hesitate to call or email me at any time.
Thank you – stay safe and stay well!
